The Madness of Putin Part 18

5 March – Civilian evacuation from Mariupol failed as Russian forces began shelling the city as well as the agreed-upon evacuation routes. Ukrainians continue to protest against the Russian occupants in the eastern city of Kherson. Hundreds of people attend protests there, carrying Ukrainian flags and posters saying, “Kherson in Ukraine.”To attempt to stop them, Russian troops fired their assault rifles into the air.

6 March – Eight civilians were killed during the evacuation from Irpin, a town near Kyiv. An entire family of four, including two children, was killed when Russian troops opened fire on civilians who were trying to evacuate by bus. Part of the city is now occupied by Russian forces, but the area is largely controlled by Ukrainian soldiers who continue to fight, according to Irpin mayor Olexander Markushin. A Russian missile hit a TV tower in Kharkiv, and local broadcasts were interrupted. The tower is intact, but one of the cables is broken. Elsewhere, five people were killed and another wounded as Russian troops fired at a Ukrainian checkpoint in Kyiv Oblast.

7 March – At least 13 civilians were killed in an airstrike on a bread factory in Kyiv Oblast, according to the State Emergency Service. Ukrainian troops downed two Russian aircraft over Kyiv. Ten people died as a result of shelling by Russian forces in Kharkiv; one child was hospitalized. The shelling damaged an art museum in Kharkiv. And so many politicians say this isn’t a war? A Russian commander captured by Ukraine condemned Moscow’s “genocide” invasion — saying in a remarkable televised statement that the troops were duped into believing Kyiv had been overthrown by Nazis and needed liberating. National Guard Lt. Col. Astakhov Dmitry Mikhailovich, who was captured along with two other soldiers, said he had been told they were being sent to help Ukraine because it was “dominated by a fascist regime” and that “nationalists and Nazis had seized power.”
