The influential Home Affairs Committee in Parliament is launching an inquiry into how well the UK and French governments are working together. Critics say that much more needs to be done to prosecute people smugglers on both sides of the Channel. Charities that support migrants say that if the government made it easier for people to seek asylum in the UK, the numbers of illegal crossings would fall.
