July 2019. Scotland Yard came Under Fire today after warning journalists they could be Prosecuted for publishing a leaked government document. Neil Basu, Britain’s leading anti-terrorism officer, was criticised after making a sweeping statement that the media should never publish State Secrets. The Metropolitan Police chief made the comments as he announced a Criminal Investigation into the leak of diplomatic cables that led to the resignation this week of Britain’s ambassador to Washington, Sir Kim Darroch. However, Basu’s comments were immediately criticised by senior journalists and leading politicians, including George Osborne, the former chancellor and now editor of the Evening Standard newspaper. Osborne said Basu failed to understand the importance of Press Freedom and urged Cressida Dick, the Met Police Commissioner, to Disown his Warning. For the first time in my life I agree with Osborne, Free Speech is one of the Major Pillars of Democracy, it Desperately needs Defending cause it’s Under Attack.
